Drs. Lisa and Dale Davis and our team understand not everyone enjoys visiting their orthodontist. But we strive to bring you the best and most comforting experience at each visit.
To help patients unwind, our Midland, MI office has a Wii and touch screen gaming system with over 100 games and a full beverage bar. We also have a tooth brushing center with pre-pasted toothbrushes, an AWESOME incentive system for good brushing & oral hygiene habits. Davis & Davis Orthodontics support National Orthodontic Health Month
Can you believe October is already upon us? October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.
Many hard, sticky, and sugary treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are undergoing orthodontic treatment, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong treatment time. The AAO recommends patients avoid the following foods:
• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice
Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis also recommend that patients drink lots of water and brush after every meal or snack. If you happen to damage your braces, please give Davis and Davis Orthodontics a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our office.

Why are straight teeth so important? Davis & Davis Orthodontics explains!
Today, Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis would like to explain the importance of straight teeth, as well as a few little known facts about orthodontic treatment.
A few reasons why straight teeth are so important:
-Straight teeth improve self esteem, also helping you achieve a whiter smile.
-Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!
-Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.
Davis and Davis Orthodontics does not require a dentist referral for consultations, and we do recommend that patients visit our office by the age of 7. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions about orthodontic treatment options in Midland, MI, or if you would like to schedule a complimentary consultation with Davis and Davis Orthodontics.
We look forward to seeing you!

Fluoride, your friend during orthodontic treatment
There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment with Drs. Davis and Davis. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there is another, often forgotten about, way to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement.
Fluoride used in the orthodontists’ office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your doctor how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride.
When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

Ask Drs. Davis: How can Invisalign® benefit my oral health?
When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Davis & Davis Orthodontics than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:
Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.
Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.
Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.
If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Drs. Lisa or Dale Davis the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

Ask Drs. Davis & Davis: What's the deal with retainers?
If you recently completed treatment at Davis and Davis Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you on your beautiful new smile! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Dale or Lisa Davis will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, always provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Dale or Lisa Davis is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.
To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Davis and Davis Orthodontics, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call!

Cool kids get braces, from Davis & Davis Orthodontics
Today, braces are seen as “cool” and—many teens would say—even “fun.” These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are undergoing or have completed orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as Invisalign® and iBraces™, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.
The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.
Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with (Insert Name of Doctor), and may contribute to the success of treatment.
Has your child or teen visited Davis & Davis Orthodontics for a consultation? If not, please give us a call and let us help your child begin the journey to a gorgeous smile!

Davis and Davis Orthodontics wants to know: are there teeth grinders in your house?
Grind, grind, grind. If you live with a teeth grinder, this unpleasant sound may be all too familiar, especially recently. A recent study by Head & Face Medicine suggests that people often cope with stress by grinding their teeth. In addition, the Chicago Dental Society suggests that since the recession began, teeth grinding, or bruxism, is on the rise.
The Chicago Dental Society surveyed more than 250 members about the connection between stress and oral health. Nearly 75 percent of dentists said their patients reported increased stress over the past year, largely due to the economic recession. During stressful times, teeth grinding can be a nuisance that causes headaches and sleep problems, but it also can cause lasting problems for your teeth and gums, including chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder.
The first step of recovering from teeth grinding is noticing the problem, says Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis. Symptoms of teeth grinding include:
• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth
An important thing to remember is that people frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, and taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, schedule an appointment to see us by giving us a call. Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis and our team at Davis and Davis Orthodontics can help determine the cause of the problem.

Facebook Do's and Don'ts for Parents from Davis & Davis Orthodontics
Parents oftentimes sign up for Facebook accounts and ‘friend’ their children, often as a way to keep an eye on their online activities. But then what? Many parents in this digital age are still lost when it comes to effective methods for monitoring the online safety of their children, while still allowing them respect and privacy.
Last fall, parenting author Vicki Courtney wrote a helpful post on the things parents should and shouldn’t do while surfing through their kids’ Facebook profiles. Drs. Dale and Lisa and our team at Davis & Davis Orthodontists thought you might benefit from reading Vicki’s interesting piece.
Here are “Top Ten Facebook No-Nos for Parents,” designed specifically for those moms and dads who aren’t sure whether they’ve crossed the line in monitoring their kids’ presence online.
We hope you find this article informational. Please let us know what you think by posting a comment on this blog or on our Facebook page!

The importance of regular checkups, from Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis
Drs. Dale and Lisa want to know: is your child brushing his or her teeth twice a day as recommended during their treatment? If the answer is yes, we think that's fantastic! But, it’s also important for your child to visit the dentist every six months in addition to brushing their teeth a couple times a day, flossing (and visiting Davis & Davis Orthodontics as recommended by Drs. Dale or Lisa Davis during your treatment). Our staff will tell you regular dental checkups are vital for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:
• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and signs of tooth decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show your child how to properly brush and floss their teeth, even during their orthodontic treatment
During an oral exam, your dentist will check the health of your child’s mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups also typically include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If your child has not been to the dentist in the past six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!
If you don't have a general dentist in Midland or nearby communities in Midland County, please ask and we'll be happy to provide one!

More happy patients at Davis & Davis Orthodontics!
Midland orthodontists Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis love getting patient testimonials from current and former patients. In fact, here are a few reviews our office received recently. Please feel free to contribute your own thoughts about your treatment at Davis & Davis Orthodontics!
"Everything, but ultimately they appear to have the patient in mind." ~ Jennifer S.
"Very "kid friendly" atmosphere. My daughter was very nervous about seeing an orthodontist. After we left out consult visit she told me "I'm not even nervous anymore. I love it there!" The staff were very friendly and informative. Very up to date equipment." ~ Ian D.
"When I saw Lisa Davis for the first time for a minor adjustment, she didn't try to sell me an entire set of braces...she offered 'removable' braces and they worked great. I liked that she found an affordable, flexible option for me." ~ Roger Y.
"Dr. Dale Davis has done a wonderful job with Lauren!! Her teeth are beautiful and have remained so for a number of years. She still comes in when her retainers need adjusting, etc. and Dr. Dale Davis is always willing to help even after Lauren's braces have been removed several years ago!!" ~ Paul M.
"Office staff is by far the best of any health care professional office I've ever dealt with in terms of friendliness, helpfulness knowledge and efficiency." ~ Cynthia M.

Tell Drs. Dale & Lisa: What are you up to this summer?
As the school year comes to an end for a lot of our patients, the days will get longer and the temperatures will begin to climb, and there’s no better way to beat the Michigan heat than jumping into a pool or cooling off under the shade with a beverage. For a lot of our patients in Tampa, summer brings a chance to get away from it all and escape every-day life, if only for a week or two. For others, it means a season of relief from homework and general relaxation
How about you?
What are your plans for summer? Do you have any interesting plans for a summer vacation? Does your family have a family reunion planned? Drs. Dale and Lisa want to see when and how you are all spending your summer vacations. If you’re going somewhere exotic, great! If you're going camping, terrific! Even if you're staying at home, that can be fun, too.
Please feel free to share your summer plans and experiences with us on our Facebook page as the summer rolls along!

Davis & Davis Orthodontics, supporting National Smile Month
It's June already! Where does the time go?
Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis are excited to tell you June marks National Smile Month, a great time to remind our patients to brush, floss, practice good nutrition at home (and over the summer) to avoid cavities and gum disease, among other dental health issues.
After all, there's more and more evidence that suggests folks with gum disease are more at risk for serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.
Here are a few easy steps you can improve your oral health at home:
* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during treatment.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).
If you have questions about any of the tips here, we encourage you to give us a call at 989.631.1334! We hope you had a relaxing Memorial Day weekend!

Drs. Lisa and Dale Davis want to know: is dairy a big part of your diet? If not, it probably should be! A study published just two years ago found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease, or gum disease.
Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected in studies to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.
Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite and sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles!
For more information about the importance of dairy in your diet and keeping your teeth healthy, give us a call at 989.631.1334, and have a great rest of the weekend!

Ask Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis: Am I too old for braces?
At Davis & Davis Orthodontics, nobody is too old for braces! In fact, our staff recently read a fascinating statistic: the number of adults getting braces has climbed 24 percent since 1996! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.
If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis would love to have you visit for a consultation. Please give us a call to set one up!

Dale and Lisa Davis and our team at Davis and Davis Orthodontics, that only means one thing: it’s once again time to remind our dear patients to protect their faces and pearly whites. Above is a helpful video from our friends at the AAO about staying safe on the ball field this spring.
We hope the above video helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of the tips offered in the video, please contact our staff. And remember to have fun and stay safe on the field this spring!

Wishing you Happy St. Patty's Day, from Davis and Davis Orthodontics
Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis hope you remembered to dress in green when you stepped out the door this morning. Whether Irish or not, millions of people around the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day with toasts, parades and "the wearing of the green." Here are some fun facts about St. Patty’s Day our team knows you will enjoy:
• St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17th because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history.
• The name “lephrechaun” has several origins. It could be from the Irish Gaelic word “leipreachan,” which means “a kind of aqueous sprite.” Or, it could be from “leath bhrogan,” which simply means “shoemaker.”
• Some American towns have Irish names. They include: Shamrock Lakes, Indiana; Shamrock, Oklahoma; Shamrock, Texas; Dublin, California and Dublin, Ohio and Mount Gay-Shamrock, West Virginia
• Despite what you may have heard, St. Patrick never banished snakes from Ireland. In fact, no snakes exist or ever existed in Ireland. Ireland is surrounded by icy ocean waters, much too cold to allow snakes to migrate from Britain or anywhere else.
• St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in Boston, in 1737. Approximately 34 million Americans claim Irish ancestry. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has 4.1 million people.

Go Incognito™ with Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis!
Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis understand most orthodontic patients have an aversion to the idea of “metal mouth” during treatment. A lot of patients have found alternatives to the classic bracing system, instead choosing to strengthen their pearly whites with Incognito™, lingual orthodontic braces that are made for teens and adults, and are custom-made for each person. Because they are placed behind your teeth, they are hidden, and no one will ever know you are wearing braces unless you tell them.
If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, or would like to learn more about Incognito orthodontic braces please visit our web site or contact Davis and Davis Orthodontics today!

The importance of mouth guards, from Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis
Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s almost springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Davis for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball and soccer. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements we are trying to achieve.
In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Davis & Davis Orthodontics. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Davis will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment.
Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at Davis & Davis Orthodontics.

Age 7 is the magic number for an orthodontic check-up, from Davis & Davis Orthodontics
Many parents assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Consequently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.
What’s so great about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites, and open bites can be detected.
Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.
Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment, Drs. Davis say. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, give us a call at Davis & Davis Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.

Invisalign Tips, from Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis
Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. The team at Davis & Davis Orthodontics would like to remind you that good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Drs. Davis want you to ask yourself the following questions:
1.) Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.
2.) Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.
3.) Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.
These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Davis & Davis Orthodontics, please give us a call!
